I have a 9 week old baby boy born via gestational surrogacy whom I am breastfeeding after doing the accelerated protocol. I have had great success and do not need to supplement at all. However 2 weeks ago I got AF. I was shocked as I breastfeed my other 2 children and did not get AF for several months after they were weaned. Is this normal with induced lactation? Should I expect AF again next month?
Thanks and regards Elle

It isn't something you need to be worried about if that is what you mean by is it normal. As for whether or not you will have af next month you'll just have to wait and see. Your cycle may go back to being regulated and it may not. Keep in mind that if pregnancy is possible for you that you can get pregnant while nursing even if you haven't seen af in awhile.
Bravo on the breastfeeding of your little one.

Hi Elle,

CONGRATULATIONS on your new little one and on a fabulous breastfeeding experience!!

Having a period at this point is quite normal. When we induce lactation it's not the same as being pregnant and then breastfeeding. You may or may not receive your period next month...did you have a full period or spotting? Breakthrough bleeding is quite common. If you are concerned about becoming pregnant, please use a barrior method form of birth control such as a condom or diaphram.

Note that many birth mothers have a period six weeks post partum and continue to breastfeed.

Best,

Thanks for the feedback. I did have a very heavy period. Heavier than normal. Usually I have a light period without much bright red blood and it's over in a day. This was very heavy lots of red rather than brown blood and was 3 days. It was just a bit of a shock as I was not expecting it. I have been have ovary pains this week so I guess I'll get another period soon. As long as the milk is not affected I'm ok with it.
