I just had my third miscarriage, and takes 4 months to get an appt to see the specialist! In the mean time I am looking for information. Here is my back ground: I had tested positive for anti cardiolipins after my second miscarriage. My doctor also mentioned that I had tested positive for Leiden factor. At this point I am not sure if these are the same thing or not. As soon as I became pregnant again, I was put on Heparin 2 times daily (.25ml). There was a heart beat at 6 1/2 weeks, and a week later there was not, so I had my 3rd miscarriage. Chromosome testing on my husband and myself came back normal, as well as all the other tests. I'll be 35 this July.
As I read through different materials regarding my situation it is always mentioned that a low dose of baby aspirin is taken in conjunction with the Heparin. What is the difference between the baby aspirin and Heparin; what is the role of each respectively. Have there been any studies on the success rate between Heparin vs Heparin + Aspirin?
Any information would be so helpful!!!
Thanks

Hello,
I am so sorry for your losses. I had 3 m/c and 4 ectopics...plus 4 failied IVF attempts.
Heparin is a blood thinner. Aspirin also thins the blood (inhibits platelets from clumping together to form a clot),,,but it also has anti-inflamatory qualities. I have also heard of using the two together. When I did the IVF I took a baby aspirin a day, just for the heck of it.. I was tested for all the antibodies etc..and all was normal. All my fetuses were analyzed and were normal. It was so frustrating.
Take a little time to heal, you were saying that it takes 4 months to see the specialist. Lenore knows all about the antibodies and what to do. I am sure she will chime in here.
Again, sorry for your loss, we are all here for you. Take care, Cathy

Cathy-
Thanks for your kind words of support! Well, I had e-mailed my question to Lenore before I figured out these message boards, and she replied with her comments plus an article that contained information regarding my situation. Basically, if the miscarriages are a result of Thrombotic defects (which mine my be, but I'll leave that up to the RE) they have 100% success rate with the low dose aspirin AND Heparin.
The thing that really frustrates me is that fter my second miscarriage, the doctor (parental) told me that the next time I get PG to get on Heparin right away. Then I did some research on recurrent miscarriage and saw that the typical approach was to use Heparin and Aspirin in conjunction. So I called the doctor's office and said I had a question for the Dr., I wanted to know if I should be taking aspirin when I start the Heparin, the woman told me I could but it would not help, and did not pose the question to the Dr. Her response to me was short and in a tone that made me feel like an idiot for even asking. So I left it at that.
Well now I am on to the RE. I am glad I have the information, and I am feeling abit more postive about everything.
Thanks again.

Barbi Here (I don't know why it won't let me sign in - I keep getting an error). Anyway, first, I am so sorry for your loses, I just had my second miscarriage last month and I know how painful it is -- and this last one has been harder than my one last summer.

I went ahead and had all the tests done (at my drs. recommendation), and everything came back ok, accept for the sticky platelet syndrome, which came back borderline. My dr. told me to go ahead and see Dr. Bick, the specialist, and that was well worth it. He recommended going on aspirin right away, which I have, and told me when I get pregnant, if there is definitely a blood disorder (see earlier post), he will start me on heparin immediately after I get pregnant again. He said out of 300 patients he has seen and used this protocol, only three have had miscarriages since. I go back next Tuesday for the results of all the blood tests they did last week, so we will see at that point exactly what can be done.

Take care,

Barbi

Barbi-
Thanks for the info from your doctor! I am really regretting that I was not on both the Heparin and Aspirin this last pregnancy. Oh well, I can't dwell on it too much, it's too depressing! This information gives me some hope that this might really work the next time. I don't know how many more times I can intentionally get PG knowing there is a good chance I could miscarriage, too much for my conscience.
Thanks again.

I am wondering how soon after you knew you were pregnant that your doctor put you on Heparin? I have had 4 m/c in 4 years. Lost 7 babies (twins twice) Finally have been diagnosed with antiphosolipid antibodies. I am now 5.5 weeks pregnant and waiting for the test results to come back from the lab. Do I have time to wait or should I insist on being put on heparin? I've been taking the baby aspirin anyway hoping that will help. I'm desperate, I'm 38 going on 50 cause this is tearing my whole life and world apart.

Hi,

I'm so sorry for your losses. As a mom who lost babies to miscarriage I must implore you to start the Heparin as soon as possible. You have absolutely no time to waste. Dr. Bick is one of the world authorities on recurrent miscarriage. Please take both Heparin AND baby Aspirin as soon as possible. You still have time to save this pregnancy.

Esther
