Sorry if I'm repeating something that's been asked before, I can't seem to find any information on this.

We've just been approved, and I am anxious to start the protocol. I really want the best chance at a good supply, and I'd rather be pumping with no baby than have a baby and not "enough" milk.

What I'm wondering, though, is if you can just continue on the regular protocol for longer than six months, and not start pumping until there's actually a match?

I'm committed to giving this my very best, but I'm apprehensive about getting "stuck" pumping forever...

Oh, another question: when in your cycle do you start? does is matter?

Thanks so much, these forums are such a great resource!!

I had planned to be on the protocol until we matched. I was on it for 8 months and then we had a last second placement, so I started pumping the day we were placed with our daughter. I was so glad I had done the protocol in advance, because otherwise I would have just been starting it when our daughter came home and would have to have waited a month or more to start pumping.

I also can't imagine pumping long term. I hate pumping. We are waiting again and I am debating waiting until we are placed with the baby again to start pumping this time too. I was able to build a supply quite quickly the last time (within 2 weeks). If I do pump in advance I probably won't do it more than 2-3 weeks.

I was told the best day to start the bcp's is day 5 of your cycle. That is when I started them and I had no spotting for most of the time I was on the protocol. If you are in a hurry then start whenever, but if you are just starting the protocol to wait for a match then I would say start on day 5.

Good luck!
Jennifer

I have been on the protocol for 8 months, and will be for at least another 2 months as our adoption case experienced some delays this summer. I recently emailed Lenore about a related issue and she did not comment on the longer-than-usual phase of the protocol that I am doing other than to suggest that for the last 2 months I change from Yasmin to Ortho 1/35 as that is what gets the most consistent results. (I am not planning on taking that advice).
