Hi Lenore,
I just discovered this website and this very helpful message board. I am currently in the process of trying to bring up my milk supply for my (almost) 5 month old son. He went on a nursing strike about one month ago and I was pumping and giving him the bottle, but my supply decreased. He is open to being on the breast again but my supply no longer meets his demand. I have a prescription for domperidone but only want to go on it as a last resort. After reading some of the messages on this board, I will start pumping during the night. My question is this...if my son is nursing every 2 hours, should I pump right after or wait a little while? And...if I wait, won't my son find the next feeding meagre?
My son is still getting some supplementary bottle feedings which I'd like to eliminate (except for special nights out, etc.). Do you think it is imperative that I use something other than the bottle?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Jenny,

Welcome! Well best bet is to get yourself a good double electric breastpump. Most of the moms seem to prefer the Pump in Style by Medela.

The best way to increase your milk supply is to drain, drain, drain your breasts. So breastfeeding then pumping immediately afterwards for about 10 min should do the trick. We usually recommend a 48 hour "baby honeymoon" where you breastfeed and or pump every 2 hours by day and once during the night. You should notice a difference after that. If not, then by all means use your domperidone prescription. That should essentially double your milk supply in no time flat.

Fondly,

Hi,
I was surprised that I am actually getting the same if not more milk with the Avent Isis hand pump,,,seems that those little petal design plastic insert is what my milk production likes. We were on our way to Guatemala today, and its a long story,,,but we are back home...just wanted to say I actually left my PIS home on purpose and just brought my Isis. If we had gotten down there i was going to pump the other side while she nurses ,and the one hand operation is good. I know the double electric is rec. for inducing lactation, just wanted to say I paid 300 dollars for the electric pump and 42 dollars for the Avent,,and it is working so much better for me,,building up my arm strenght also! Now it looks like its up in the air if we will ever have our second child...if this doesn't work out, I don't know what we are to do....Thanks for listening, Cathy

Cathy,
I am glad that the Avent Isis pump is working so well for you. I have one I will have to try it and see what happens. As soon as I get it back from my sister I will try it. I recommended it to her and she has breastfed numerous times. I learned from the different message boards that the Isis is a good manual pump.

Again I wanted to say sorry about the news you recieved today. Is there anything you can do? It sure sounds like you have paid alot of money for it to be nonrefundable. You mentioned something someone in the agency said to the effect that don't consider it your baby until you send in the second part of the money. That does not sit right with me either. Maybe I am in laa laa land but whose interests are they the person who said this thinking of.

It scares me to think of all the different agencies that are out there. We feel protected in the fact that we are going with an agency through our church. I know from firsthand experience that they have the best interests of the children as top priority.

Perhaps you could call someone from the National Council for Adoption. I get newsletters from them I could get you a number. They are based in Alexandria, Virgina I think. Maybe someone at their office could be of some help. I think to that they would probaly have a list of reputable adoption agencies. Agencies both domestic and international. Maybe you have already thought of something like this in the past I do not know.

I hope that tommorow shines a brighter day for you. Maybe things will still work out with Ana Sofia. Again I will say that the babies that come into our homes by adoption are exactly where they are meant to be. I also feel that our babies find their way to us with a little help from up above.

Take Care,
Bella

Cathy,
I have been praying so hard for you. I even told my Grandma about you, and asked her to pray for you. What happened? Does this mean you are done with this agency, or are you waiting for another referral? I will pray even more for you. I am so sad that you have had such a rough time. Please know that I am thinking of you and your family.

Thanks Dawn,
We will know for sure today if any new adoption cases are going to be started. From what we were told yesterday, do not travel, as the Embassy 'might' not start any new cases as of now...of course our case was to start today.
She is already 8 days old, it's killing me not to see her. If they do stop all adoptions for who knows how long, we could probably still hold on to her, but she may be over 1 year old when she is able to come home. So much for all the clothes I have already bought, the breastfeeding would be so much harder etc... Our other option is to totally change countries and do all the paperwork again. Hmmm...not much fun. We had to go through alot of this same stuff in Peru, and we finally got him out. You realize all these problems in Guatemala are d/t our US government coming up with this stuipid Hague Treaty..adoptions were going very well until the US government got involved. So, with a country with THE highest birthrate right now,,,its not good to suspend all adoptions,,kids will be dying. But, nothing in this world makes sense. Thanks for caring, we will let you know what happens. Take care, Cathy

Thanks Eden,
And I am not particularly religious either, but I will pray that your adoptoin goes through also...the only good news is that with the Avent Isis handpump, I have already gotten 1/2 ounce in 2 pumpings today,,whereas the PIS I was only getting 1/4 ounce for the whole day! My forearms are getting in shape also!
I will know more today, we are going to fight for her,,she stole my heart and she does not deserve all of this. We are keeping our suitcases packed, waiting to hear some news today. Thanks everyone,,,we are not giving up on her yet..!
take care,
Cathy

Cathy,
You can take the petal flange and put it on the PIS horn. It works really well.
