I am a 38 yo mother of 3 healthy boys conceived when I was 31, 33, 35. All 3 pregnancies were normal, uneventful. I passed on all optional procedures and used a midwife for delivery.

This year I conceived again and was due in January 2004 but miscarred in June. The preganancy was marked from the beginning by spotting, no pregnancy symptoms, a pregnancy test that reluctantly showed positive and heavy bleading which began in what should have been 8. 5 weeks. The ultrasound showed no heartbeat and the baby measured 7 wks. "implanted in the uterus." I had a D&C.

I conceived again in August. This time the pregnancy test was boldly positive, no spotting, but I experienced none of the pregnancy symptoms that I have normally had. At what I determined was 7.5 wks. I began to bleed heavily and went in. There was a heartbeat and the baby was "a viable pregnancy in the uterus." However, the measurements did not coincide with the dates. The baby measured 6.5 wks. I was scheduled to return a week later to measure growth, but the bleeding continued and 2 days later I returned to the office - no heartbeat and another D&C.

My doctor indicated that the rate of miscarriage does increase with age and that miscarriage is "nature's way" of treating an unhealthy baby.

I have never taken birth control and don't desire to. Conceiving does not seem to be a problem. I would welcome ...yes, celebrate more children. My reading leads me to believe that my hormone levels have not been sufficient for the two pregnancies. If this is accurate, will all future pregnancies end in miscarriage without homonal intervention?

I have an appointment with my Dr. on monday for a consult, so I can discuss future pregnancies. FRankly the Dr. is simply the physician that I had to have with the Midwife, so we don't have much of a relationship. I'm disappointed that my Dr. hasn't initiated any of this discussion in my appointments, but we'll see where we go with this on Monday.

I need feedback on all my musings.

Thank you.

Hi,
A uterine biopsy done at a certain day of the month..tests progesterone levels...I was found to have a luteal phase defect and was not prducing enough progesterone. I had my first miscarriage at age 24,,then went on to lose six more pregnancies..none of which I was on progesterone. 4 were uterine, 3 were ectopic. I feel that if I was on progesterone for the first 3 pregnancies, I may have carried them. But,,back then, they let you have 3 miscarriages before they tried to find a cure. I did 4 IVF tx's and even got pregnant 2x on my own in between the IVF's, but I did not know it until it was too late to get on the progesterone, so I lost those.
I would say,,definately have the uterine bx,,you need to know if you are making enough progesterone,,or,,sometimes the doc's will just put you on the suppositories prophylactically to prevent miscarriage.
It is great that you have no trouble getting pregnant..it sounds like you just need some hormonal support. Take care, Cathy

If you need to go any further in fertility testing may I suggest that you find the very best fertility specialist (not just an obgyn who also does some fertility work) in your area and see him or her. In the long run it is worth it to see a specialist.

I also have 3 healthy boys at home. My pregnancies were all healthy with no problems. My last two pregnancies ended at 4 and 5 mos. My last one at 5 months was so unexpected because we saw the heart beat at 11 months on ultrasound and heard a healthy heart beat at 15 months. I spotted the day after Thanksgiving and new something was wrong with having lost a baby one year ago at 4 months into my pregnancy.

I talked to my Dr. about things that could have caused this. He has brought up the idea of antiphospholipid syndrome. Maybe this is something you would like to bring up with your Dr. From what I have read there are not a lot of women who have this but if it is the problem it can be treated.

I too would love to welcome more children.

Well, here I am again I became pregant in January of this year. And began progesterone therapy when I discovered I was pregnant. However, it gave me fits, so I discontinued the therapy at 8 wks. I am now 19 wks. pregnant. A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with parvovirus which led my OB to do a few more blood tests. She called yesterday to say I have antiphospholipid syndrome. I started the baby aspirin regimine a week ago and I will began low-dose heparin injections on Monday of next week. I go in for a fetal scan this week to seek what the condition of the baby is. My Doc says that many patients who follow the recommended treatment go on to have successful pregnancies.
