Hello, everyone,
I have learned about this board from a friend of mine and I am happy to have found it. I have suffered three miscarriages (2/02, 9/02, and 12/03). We have a 3 1/2 year old son, who was conceived via an IVF cycle that was converted to IUI. These three losses all occurred at 5-5 1/2 weeks-- everything just stopped. Had D&Es with the first two, as the first was not discovered until about 9 wks. and the second sooner, but I just wanted eveything over with. Began bleeding after discovering that my hcg level had plummeted with the third.

My questions are this: anticardiolipin and lupus coagulant panels both came back negative-- specialist at Duke ran these last month-- should I insist on any other tests, and if so, which ones? Also, I am still nursing our son, although at this stage, it is not much-- just for naps and night-night and boo-boos. Several "helpful" "friends" (including my own mother) have suggested that this is to blame.

The first two conceptions were "'on our own" (no drugs, etc.), the third a Clomid/IUI. I did not have progesterone supplements with #1 and #2, but insisted on Crinone with #3, as that is what I used when pregnant with our son. No labwork on #1 (chalked it up to a fluke) or #3 (bled at home, wasn't going to get into that...), but karyotyping with #2 came back "normal female."

Any thoughts/feedback? Sorry so disjointed-- it is hard to organize all this on "paper."

And, I can't figure out how to "edit my profile!" Help!

Diana

Hi Diane, I can't help you with the tests questions. I am sure someone else will chime in. I will say however that the idea that you miscarried because you were nursing your toddler is HOGWASH!!!! If that were true everymidwife in the country would have us all stop nursing once we got pregnant. I nursed my daughter for at least 6 months into my pregnancy with my last child. Then off and on for another 6-12 months. No problems. She basically took a hiatus from nursing when it got sore for mommy and the taste of the milk changed. I even asked my midwife about it and she assured me there was no reason to stop.
I wish you the best on finding out what will work for your body to help you carry your children to term. I have had friends do it after numerous miscarriages and plenty of ladies here too.

Thanks, Lalle. I agree that nursing should not cause a problem. The "helpful" folks who suggested that to me already think I should not still be nursing our son. This is their way of saying, "See?! You shouldn't nurse a child that old..." I don't know why my mother said it-- I don't think she realized how accusatory it sounded or how it would hurt me.

Anyway, I would be so grateful to anyone who might have any insight as to why this keeps happening and what other tests might be helpful. I am currently waiting to see if a Clomid/IUI cycle two weeks ago was successful, but I don't think so (no symptoms...). If it did not work, I think I need to take a little break from treatment. Perhaps I ought to go to Dallas to meet with Dr. Bick...
