I just found out that "L" will deliver early. We are travelling from Japan to the States on July 31st, because her originally due date was August 8th. The tickets are set.
The doctor gave her a new date. I may miss the birth, but most importantly, I can't start BF immediately. What can I do ?
I was going to ask "L" to breastfeed until I get there, but she may say no or reluctant because she is set on placing the baby with us.
Is it possible if they introduce the bottle to him for 5 - 10 days that he may relatch.

Yasta, don't get discouraged. Yes, it is totally possible to still breastfeed. You may need to work a little harder at it, then agian maybe not with a baby that young. . In order to minimize confusion you could ask that they finger feed him. That way he will be used to sucking on skin instead of a rubber or silicon nipple. If that is not possible then have them use Avent nipples which you will need to supply. I nursed my daughter once we left the hospital. She was 2 days old by that time. I just hooked up the lact-aid and latched her on. It takes some practice to get the tube and your nipple in their mouth together but once you get it, it becomes second nature. Questions: How much before the 8th will she deliver? Will the baby stay in the hospital until you arrive or will there be foster care? Suggestion...can you ask "L" to pump so that the baby can have breastmilk? Maybe she will go for that over the nursing. I think that would be very difficult to do with a child you are placing for adoption.

Thank you, Laurie, for answering me so soon. I can ask "L" to use Avent nipples. I will mail them to her in advance.
This is a relative adoption, thus the baby will not go to foster care, I have to check on this and talk to my lawyer , because she doesn't want to bring the baby home and wanted us to take him directly from the hospital.
Hmm I just never though of her delivering early. You see I've never given birth so I thought going 9 days early would be sufficient.
In any case I will talk to "L", the hospital and my lawyer about this.

Yasta, my daughter was due on the 18th of the month and was born on the 5th. I had to change my flight at the very last minute. I ended up paying full fare and it was very expensive. Have you called the airlines to see if you can change your flight. What they usually do is give you a credit of the amount of your ticket and you pay the difference for the new flight. Mine was like a family adoption, really close family friends. Our daughter was born at 3 am and I got there at 10:30 that night. On the Avent nipples you will need Avent bottles too because that is all they fit.

Hi Yasta, No need to panic. Many mothers have found themselves in your situation, myself included. My first son came 2 months early, was premature, and did not get to the breast for 9 days. I still ended up breastfeeding him. By the time your baby arrives you will have completed most of your time on the protocols. Give yourself 4 weeks to pump so that you have a decent amount of milk in your breasts by the time your baby arrives. I agree with Lalle. Ask "L" if she's willing to pump. Arrange for 1 hole Avent nipples with matching bottles. See if you can change your flight. You have plenty of time to do this. Sometimes if you explain the situation, the airline will be more compassionate about the change. And ask the hospital to provide "L" with a hospital grade breastpump. This way your baby will receive the collostrum. And contact the folks at Lact-aid www.lact-aid.com and get hold of your nursing trainers, bags and so on that you will need to get started. Hang in there honey. It won't be long now. Fondly,

Thank you ladies, I feel a lot better. I brought the Medela, PIS Traveler and Avent nipple and bottle kit this weekend. I paid a little too much, but now it's done, besides with postage I would have paid the same.
I will order my Lact-aid nursing kit tomorrow. I also will talk to "L" about expressing her milk with the hospital unit and bottle feeding him until I get there. Hopefully it will be less than a week. I will also check with the hospital about assisting me to latch on and with a nearby La-Leche League in South Georgia.
You all have been so helpful, I could cry. I really want to do this as long as the baby will allow me.

Sounds like you are getting everything you need and have thought of all the things to do while there. As for the baby letting you nurse just keep in mind that the breast is where the baby is born to be and the bottle is a substitute for that. You will do just fine.

Hey Yasta,
I am sure you will do fine anyway, but if there is any chance at all, I would still try to change your travel plans and get there in time for the birth, not just in view of breastfeeding but the whole situation.
Whatever happens, all the best to you!
Love, Chris
