I posted this a few months ago in "Related Issues" and it still seems amazing. <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

"About Hartmann's concept of frequently draining of one's breasts:

"I recently read somewhere that there was a French physician at an orphanage that had several wet nurses for the little ones. This was back in the 1800s. He said that the wet nurses had as many as 30 nursing sessions per day, and he estimated that they produced 5 QUARTS of milk. Amazing."

Can anyone explain the physiology of this? I'm curious about the breast milk machine.

Hi LD,

There is a little whey protein that sits in the milk and tells the breasts that there's enough milk. So to make more milk, the whey protein has to be drained along with the milk. The more times the breasts are drained the more milk they will produce. For a look a the anatomy and physiology of a lactating breast, visit this webpage: http://www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_images_anatomy.html

Fondly,
