Hi all! Today is the day I begin pumping. Yahoo! I have guests that came into town for our first baby shower yesterday, so once they leave, I will plan on starting. Now for my question:
I recall reading somewhere before what settings/speeds were recommended for the PIS original, but I can't seem to find the posts anywhere. Could someone give me a reminder of what speed and suction setting to start on and for how long? I feel like after a couple of minutes you should slow the setting down, but I'm not 100% positive . . . .

you NEVER want to go above medium suction.. I would start out on low.. if its comfortable.. slowly turn it up to medium. On your speed.. start out at 5. Thats the fastest.. after a few minutes turn to 3. This mockes the pattern of a newborn. They suck real fast in the beginning to get a let down. Then they slow down . Also, get som Lansholin.I know I spelled that wrong. It will make pumping so much more comfortable. And you won't get near as sore.
Adoptive mommy to 4 , Last 2 adopted nursed. Youngest nursed till she was 5! Raising 2 grandbabies, as infants they were raised on donor breast milk

Thanks Nona! I've pumped several times today, and have gotten creamy droplets each time. I guess that's a good sign? Hopefully things will pick up in the next few weeks . . . .

When I turn the suction to 3, I hear an air escaping sound ... does anyone else hear that? I've been pumping at full suction this whole time ... I wonder if that is why my production has always been low? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Hi Christina! Yes, I heard some sort of "escape" sound when I accidentally started on the high suction setting. Once I turned it down to medium, the sound stopped. I'm pretty new to all this, so I have no idea if this would affect the amount of production . . . .
By the way, I remembered that you had told someone else the idea about cutting holes out of an old bra, and I LOVED this idea. Works great!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm... interesting ... my PIS leaks on 3 and not on 5 .... I wonder if this is okay. Glad you like the bra idea ... I can't take credit for that though .. I read that in a post on this site back in the early part of this year! Another good one I read on this site to make breastfeeding in bed easier and warmer is to cut a vertical line up the center of an old long sleeve t-shirt or turtle neck ... I tried this last night since my son is still on a nursing strike ... new look! Hee hee! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hi Christina, Please contact the store or rental station where you acquired your PIS, it should not be leaking on any setting. The hissing sound can occur when going from one setting to another but should not persist. You may have something wrong with your pump which can account for your milk supply issue. Most mothers find it very difficult to pump at the maximum setting without tissue damage. Another option is to contact Medela directly and let them know you have a problem. www.medela.com Fondly,

Ironically, Medela just sent me this new PIS to replace the other PIS that was faulty, too. Hmmmmmmmm... I had the same thought, but thought I was nuts to get two lemons in a row. I will call them again ... they were quite nice the first time ... I even posted about it .. I believe the thread was called "Singing Medela's Praises".
