Hello my name is Tia and I have Polysistic Ovarian Disease and have been trying to concieve for at least 10 years now I am married to my third husband and he has 6 kids and it is very frustrating not to be able to get pregnant. We are adopting a baby in November and I am hopping that the mother of the baby does not back out I would not be able to handle that I don't think I can't ever find anyone else who has pcos and I would like to so that I could talk to someone else and I am looking for any information that might help me to be able to concieve. I am going to try to breastfeed my adopted baby and I don't know all the things I will need to be successful. I could really use a friend Thanks!! Tia

Dear Tia,

Many mothers with PCOS have breastfed their adoptive babies. The first thing to do is contact a board certified lactation consultant so that your breast tissue can be assessed. The reason for this is that some forms of PCOS can result in what we call insufficient glandular tissue. If that is the case you will need strategies to build breast tissue and bring in your milk supply. You can find a board certified lactation consultant here: www.iblce.org Just click on the "About IBCLE" button and the US and International registries pop up. Locate an IBCLC in your area and arrange for a home visit. Explain that you are in email contact with me and that I requested an assessment. Then have her contact me at lenore@asklenore.info so that we can strategize further.

Are you currently taking any medication? Metformin? Hormones? Anything?

Best,

Lenore Goldfarb, Ph.D.,CCC,IBCLC

I too have PCOS. Four years of treatments. Concieved Owen using Follistim injections and IUI. Took 5 cycles. Then I delivered at just 24 weeks. Pumped for 3 months, but never breastfed. Just this last Sunday our newest adopted son, Liam, was born. We are breastfeeding. Protocol works. I didn't want to chance another early delivery (we're lucky Owen is fine now, but it was a long, bumpy road to get here), so we chose adoption for our next child. Good luck.

Hello Lenore Well I went to see the lactation consultant she is IBCLC and is more than willing to help me with the protocol, she did say though that here in the US dop. is not perscribable I guess I could order it on line but I had a question if there is anything else that can be perscribed instead of that I have another appointment tommorrow with her again and I am pretty sure that she will know the ways around the ropes but I am just curious what you would sugetst. I am also a little nervous about this bleeding part of the protocol I have been bleeding for the last month because of my pcos did not have a period for 3months and now I have bleed for a whole month and it has been very annoying. It has started to just be spotting but I am willing to do anything that I need to do to be able to breastfeed this baby. I guess the other thing I am very nervous about is I am a very big busted woman I wear a 42DDD and I am nervous about the baby not taking the breast because they are so big and I cannot find a comfortable nursing bra anywhere that fits me or supports me good. Does every woman adopting a new baby go through this or am I just extra paranoid? Talk to you soon Thanks Tia

Domperidone is available in the US by compounding pharmacies. That's where I have gotten mine. There's at least one in Michigan. It is more pricey than ordering overseas but you don't have to worry about customs confiscating the order.

Tia, big busted women breastfeed their babies just fine. I would look into the Bravado bra's they have Large very supportive sizes. I did a google search for Bravado Bras and there are lots of places to order them online. Here is just one http://www.nurturedfamily.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=60
Also ordering your Dom from overseas really isn't a problem. Those few women who have had their order get hung up in customs had it replaced by the global drug company free of charge. Whatever you do DO NOT let your consultant convince you to take Reglan it has terrible side effects and should not be used.

I see her again in a month and that is when we will start the protocol. If anyone has ideas or suggestions please help thanks Tia!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
