My husband and I are adopting and I really want to breastfeed. We don't have insurance yet, and the clinic here won't give us BC since we aren't going to use it "correctly". We want to do things as naturally as possible, but also would like to see results fairly soon. Any thoughts?

I am attempting to induce lactation but can't take bcp's for medical reasons. After doing lots of research, I have been using domperidone and goat's rue. Now that I am producing drops of milk(in less than 2 weeks of pumping), I have started Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek. We are expecting our baby in June with a gestational surrogate carrying our bundle of joy. You can do it!!

Also you might get in contact with a local chapter of La Leche League who may be able to tell you of health care professional who support induced lactation.

Good Luck!!!

so, you are just taking domperidone? and the goat's rue? see, i am just not sure that i will be able to get a prescription for that. we live in a small town in arkansas and everyone that i talk to about inducing lactation has no idea what i'm talking about. do i have to take domperidone to induce?
Posted By: Lalle Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/16/07 02:33 PM
Domperidone can be bought online with out a prescription and goats rue is an herb that you will probably have to buy online too unless you have a health food store nearby.
In my opinion if you want milk you are going to have to take something. The BC pill and Domperidone are part of the protocol plus herbs after you stop the pill and still take Dom. I tired it with just herbs and a lact-aid and while I produced a little it wasn't much at all. I added dom and produced a bit more. I did the protocol and produced enough to give up supplement. It really is up to you how much you do. Print off the protocols and take them into your health care provider and ask again. You will still have to get your domperidone online as it isn't sold in the US. But you can educate them with the info that you can print off of this site on the protocols They can't argue that is would be best for any baby to have breastmilk.

i agree. i tried that, though. i printed off a few articles and gave them to the doctor and she just said she couldn't and wouldn't prescribe bc knowing that i would abuse it. so, regardless, we are going to try everything we can to make it work. so, if i just take domperidone and the goat's rue, i can produce milk? if i add blessed thistle and fenugreek, would that help to produce enough?

I am taking goat's rue and dom and after 2 weeks of taking them and pumping 3-4x/day, I already get enough milk to cover the bottom of the bottle. I bought the dom from InHouse Pharmacy, http://www.inhousepharmacy.com/digestive/motilium.html. Some women buy it from Click Remedy http://www.clickremedy.com/ which is generic but reliable I hear.

Don't let uninformed physicians deter you from doing what you think is right for your baby. You tried to inform them but unfortunately some are not willing to continue to learn knew things :-(

I am doing it and so can you.

thank you! that makes me feel better. we are 2-3 months away from getting our baby, so i will look into inhouse pharmacy. should i start right away with he domperidone, or wait a while? i obviously want to get my supply up, but i am an elem school teacher and cannot always get away from my class regularly. what do you think?
Posted By: michelep Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/16/07 03:47 PM
I would start right away. You could pump before school, at lunch, after your class is dismissed and a eventually a couple times in the evening. The goal is to eventually work up to 6-8 times a day to stimulate how often a newborn will nurse. You can get goat's rue from Motherlove.com this was the only place I could find it in capsule. I didn't want to mess with liquid.

The baby gets the immunity benefits with just 4 ozs a day!! So even if you need to use a Lact-aid when you get the baby home, you get immunity and the amazing bonding experience.

Also, it takes 2-3 weeks to get the shipment, depending on how long it takes to clear customs so I would definitely order the dom even if you decide not to take it right away.

I have found that overall people are supportive but it takes some education on your part to do that. You can always just say, "I'm trying to do what is best for the baby" and few people will fault you for that. It also ends the conversation if they want to disagree.

thank you! that sounds wonderful. how much longer until you get your baby?

is it legal to get domperidone from the website? we haven't gone through our homestudy, and i am just so scared that any little thing will disqualify us.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you can order the birth control online too. Here's the website I use:

Posted By: lindseyann Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/16/07 06:08 PM
really? is it legal?
Posted By: michelep Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/16/07 08:35 PM
Sorry I was away from the computer for awhile. Yes, importing dom is legal despite what the FDA tries to make you believe. You must be getting it for personal use and only import a 90 day supply. I got 9 boxes when I ordered it. There is nothing on the box that tells what is in it and the customs form doesn't list what drug it is.

Just a word of advice from what others have said that you might not want to mention adoptive breastfeeding when doing your home study. Some social workers may react the same way the clinic did. Nobody would look at you funny for formula feeding but the bonding of breastfeeding may bother some birthmoms. I think you are planning on doing a wonderful thing for this baby, but you may not want to bring it up until that sweet baby is yours!!

okay. that sounds great! i agree. my adoption specialist is great, but very by the book old fashioned. she's a peach, but, i know what you mean. thank you for giving me some peace of mind! i was having daydreams about getting sent to jail! smile

Is it legal to order the bc online? I think that's what you were asking, right? I've not ordered it online, but I do see it listed on the website I mentioned above.
Posted By: Lalle Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/17/07 02:35 AM
I ordered mine online when I was on the protocol. I think the way they get around it is they have a prescribing doctor on staff. But yes it was legal.

So, now I have a new question. To induce naturally and farily quickly, would I just use the domperidone?
Posted By: michelep Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/19/07 06:46 PM
If you want to induce naturally you should use probably domperidone along with goat's rue which is an herb that stimulates your milk producing system to "mature". Then when you start producing milk you can add the herbs Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek. All of these can be purchased on the Internet as you mentioned you live in a small town.
Posted By: lindseyann Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/19/07 06:56 PM
wonderful! thank you so much! you are so helpful to me! i can just start taking domperidone right away? do i have to ease into it? are there any strange side effects?
Posted By: Lalle Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 11/19/07 08:28 PM
I would use the dom and the goats rue and consider the other herbs as well. You will also need to start pumping around the clock, with a quality double pump. Medela Pump in Style, or Symphony as well as Limerick PJ Jr are all recommended.

Hello Ladies,
I'm NEW. I'm an IP my Gestational Surrogate is carrying our bundle of joy. Due October 7th. I really want to breast feed, and have been reading up on this site.

Am i reading correctly, I DO NOT have to take the birth control pill to get the milk production started?
I take the Dom, which i just ordered, and the goats rue together, and pump pump pump.
When milk production comes, I start the blessed thistle and fenugreek herbs.

I had a meeting with my future pediatrician, she is a homeopath, like me. She snorted at my idea of breast feeding, saying do you really want to do this to your body, referring to the dom. Here is the question; What is the worse thing that can happen on Dom?
I'm hoping to use it for the least amount of time I need to. Am I being realistic? Do some women need it the entire time they nurse, 2-3 years?

If i take the birth control pill, will it help with the milk production or make no difference, is the goats rue just as good as the BC pill?

the last question; I made fibroids pretty quickly after taking Clomid, and the IVF drugs, will the BC pill and or the dom grow my fibroids?

Thanks for your support,
Marica.

Marica, most women need the Dom long term. I understand about homeopathy but the benefits of breastfeeding to you and baby in my opinion outweigh taking a safe pharmaceutical even if it is for years. (Likely you will be able to wean down off it maybe entirely after baby is older say a year and taking solids etc...) Amazing she would think formula is okay as it is about as synthetic as you can get.
The BCP will help with production, goats rue isn't the same but an alternative. There are women who cannot take the BCP I know that other herbs have been mentioned. Shatavari is one. I am sure Lenore will come on and answer your questions better for you.
But the BCP Dom combo is the preferred method for induction and is a very successful protocol.

Thank you Lalle,
I will do what ever it takes, to breast feed my baby. I agree with you, the best thing for my child is mothers milk.

Just a quick question; can I get the BCP on line without a prescription? where? I already ordered the Dom.

thanks,
Marica.

you can. I got mine through inhouse pharmacy I am not sure if click remedy has them too.
Posted By: Nona Re: Any Way To Induce w/o BC? - 02/22/08 02:25 AM
I know I never got a DROP of milk until the did the protocol. A few women have gotten full supplies without the BCPs. But I must say only 2 that I have known of all these years. Most others have gotten drops.. Or maybe built up to an ounce or 2 a day. IF any way possible I would suggest the BCPs protocol

Hi Everyone,

I just want to pop in here to mention that bringing in your milk "naturally" is a luxury we really do not have. But what we can do is everything in our power to bring in our milk supplies so our babies can *feed naturally*. The homeopathic pediatrician above means well but is losing sight of the fact that formula is an over-the-counter medication. Cow or soy based.... Our babies are not little cows and they are not little plants. So anything we put into them that does not come from our breast is not natural. Now formula has it's place to supplement our milk or for babies whose moms cannot provide breastmilk. But if you take a look at the World Health Organization's Code of Marketing of Breast=milk Substitutes breastmilk from mom is number one before any other thing.

So do what you can....a little medication or herbs to bring in a bigger milk supply is better than 100% feeding with over the counter stuff. And there is more to breastfeeding than the milk. There is teeth and jaw formation, bonding, nurturing. This "homeopath" needs to thing about the word "home" in that title. Mother is the baby's home or environment. The skin to skin contact in mom's arms provides a safe place, a nurturing place....that's what *home* means to your baby.

Best, Lenore

i am so motivated by your success so far. I started pumping about 1.5 weeks ago and just started dom 3 days ago- i am see drops of milk (not a lot but something) i think this is a good sign!
I am only taking 10mg 3 times a day and want to increase tomorrow to 20mg 4 times a day. How much are you taking, and how much goat's rue are you taking?
You didnt take the bcp before dom and your pumping routine, right? I was so worried about not doing that part of the protocol but i didnt think i could because of existing meds. and timing (I am expecting a baby april 20th from a surrogate mom!).
I wish you luck and hope i get more milk soon.
Any suggestions about dosages or sometime else that might work, please pass along.
thanks
