Hello everyone
Today I shared my milk with my two year old who will soon be three. Many of my son's cousins have been sick and today I noticed a bit of a runny nose so I thought why not. My son likes to see the milk come out when pumping and hand expressing sometimes I will even give him a drop of the milk so I figured that he would open to drinking it in a cup. I mixed cow's milk with about 5 ozs. of my milk. He drank almost all of it. Having many regrets that I did not breastfeed my son this made me feel good to give him some breastmilk. So now in my mind I can at least think that I was able to give my son some liquid gold. Lately to I have been thinking on how grown up my son is. Doing this and having him drink it I thought maybe he is not so big after all. Hope none of you think I'm crazy.

Nice to see you are up to 13 ounces,,thats great. I got an Avent Isis hand pump today to bring with me to Guatemala in case the power is out or my PIS breaks,,,would you believe I get more out with this hand pump than the double electric? I really like the petal cushy insert that compresses the aerola.
Anyways,,,I don't think you are crazy. My son, 11 at the time, wanted to taste my milk, so he came running over with a straw and placed it on the phlange and started sucking with the straw..he only got a few drops, and I wish I cuold have given him this when he was a baby. He said it tasted very sweet. I was joking that I can say I gave my son breastmilk also.
We are close to leaving for GU. We got our referral of a beautiful baby girl , over 8 lbs at 2 days old, she is very pudgy, with 2 chins. She has wispy brown hair and I am assuming brown eyes, cannot really tell in the newborn photo. As soon as we get the medical reports back from her physical, we are on our way!!! Pictures will be on a website, more info to follow. It is a shame she will not be ready until December though. Thanks everyone! Cathy

This is going to be my last e-mail for awhile. I am leaving tomorrow. Be back some time in August. I can't believe how much my son's airfare was,, my rate was less because of an adoption discount.
Now our facilitator is saying not to expect her to be home by Christmas, maybe February now...They are still revising all the adoption laws there . At least we know pretty much what to expect.
We got one of the few remaining hotel rooms left in Guatemala city. I did not know that this time of year was such a popular time to go down there, but everything is pretty much booked.
Our facilitator told me "Whatever you do,,don't mention to ANYONE that you are breastfeeding'"...I was a little surprised by that,,,she said "The lawyer could see you doing that and deem you an unfit mother and take the baby away".. I can't believe that in a country where all those native Indian women must be breastfeeding, that anyone would be so surprised to see me doing it...but I guess I have to be carefull, never know whats going to happen.
And, when she says things like "don't even think your getting your baby until we get your second check" that kind of takes some of the joy out of the situation.

As for breastfeeding toddlers YOU GO GIRL!!!! Babies can benefit the most until age five. You go ahead and breastfeed all you want. It's the very best thing for your baby AND toddler. No need to mix, give it to him straight. You may need to cool it down in the fridge a bit so it's more like the milk he's used to. Mixing actually reduces the immunological effect. So straight up is best. And all you need is about 1/2 oz for your baby to get all the immune benefits. You're right, it is liquid gold. A gift that will last a lifetime.

And just to repeat my personal experience with an "older baby", my husband fought a nasty bug, clostridium difficile for two years. I finally convinced him to drink some of my pumped breastmilk that I was saving for our son who had not been born yet. Voila! No more nasty bug, only took about two weeks.

I passed this story on to a friend who had a friend in a similar cirumstance. The doctor Ok'd her breastmilk as treatment and again, Voila, no more C.Diff. This poor friend had been on IV meds and the breastmilk cured him in a WEEK.

So like I said YOU GO GIRL!!
