I was able to pump fairly pain free when breast feeding my bio children. Today was day 2 of pumping on protocol and OUCH! I am VERY sore and bought some nipple cream to help. Is it normal to have pain in your nipples with pumping? What am I doing wrong? I did turn down the pump but it still hurts.

I think it hurt me a little when I started pumping. When you pumped for your bio kids your nipples were already toughened up from them bf regularly. Right now your nipples aren't toughened up at all. It shouldn't hurt a lot though. You could try adding a little olive oil to your nipple before putting the pump on to lubricate it. What kind of pump are you using?

when coming off the protocols my nipples were very sensative and sore for a few weeks. Start your suction on low... when its confortable raise it to medium. But NEVER go further than medium. Nipple cream is great.

Not to hijack this thread....but why should you never go further than medium? I have been....should I not be?

Hi bellaluna,

I've been wondering the same thing. I pump over medium... whatever it takes to get the milk out (as long as it doesn't hurt). I'd love an explanation.

I didn't post the warning, but I think it is that you don't want to traumatize the nipple. You shouldn't have to set it on the highest setting to get the milk out.

You can actually damage your breast tissue by pumping over the medium setting.

On the note of nipple cream, Nipple Nurture Butter is all food-grade without paraben or lanolin. I'd highly recommend it! Also, soothies, which are gel pads you freeze (sounds bad until your nipples really hurt...) and place in bra. Really sound relief.
