Hi,
I have been pumping for one week and two days. I have been pumping between 6-7 times per day with one problems until today when I woke up. My right breast is so painful, hard, and hot. I tried pumping but it seems like the milk is not expressing. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you for your help.

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I would recommend taking a hot shower or use warm, wet hand towels as compresses and do a lot of massaging of the breast. That will help with let down and then you can try manually expressing. I found manually expressing was sometimes easier than pumping when my breasts were very tender.

Good Luck!

It sounds like a clogged milk duct. I got them a few times. My LC recommends lecithin to help get rid of a clogged duct. She recommends taking it every hour until the clog resolves. If you get them recurrently, she recommends taking lecithin 2-4 times a day regularly. If it gets worse or you get a fever, go to the doctor, it could be mastitis. What Claudia recommended of warm compresses also can be helpful.

In my experience, I actually had a milk blister that was causing the clog. I had to look very carefully at the breast and could find a very small white dot. I had to pick it out and then the clog would resolve.

You can find more info about clogs and milk blisters at kellymom.com

Hope it resolves soon!
Jennifer

I had a clogged duct recently and I massaged the breast a lot while I was pumping and it went away after a few days.
