I have a very unique situation and a child who according to all the doctors should not be alive. I tried to breastfeed but it did not go well. Now I want to try and relactate or maybe get some donated breastmilk??? Please help as I am at my wit's end trying to solve her feeding issues. I attempted to breastfeed Isabella for a couple of months and tried pumping. With 5 other children at home, 2 of them under the age of 7, I quit pumping and gave up. She would not latch, always clamped down and just would not nurse. I breastfed all of my other children, but had no success with her. She was in the NICU at Aultman Hospital for 20 days; 8 of them were spent with a ventilator which I know helped to contribute to her not nursing. She is terrified of the bottle and my breasts.
I have no milk now, but have wondered recently if maybe it is possible to relactate? She is almost 7 months old and is now spoon feeding and cup feeding; mainly juice and baby fruit. She does not tolerate any type of formula very well and will almost always vomit it back up. She was on a NG (nasogastric tube) until May 13th, when I was finally able to take it out because she was spoon feeding.
When I try and get her to nurse now, she will latch on occasionally (usually when she is sleepy) and will suck. I was initially told she had no suck/swallow due to the brain damage she sustained at birth in her motor area. She DOES have a suck and swallow, she is just afraid.
Any chance of donated milk? I am really being pressured to get her surgery for a G-tube (gastric tube) so that I can put formula directly into her tummy. I have been fighting and saying no since she was 3 weeks old. I want to try and relactate but the question is can she nurse? I would be willing to try and travel somewhere to have someone help me work with her. Donated breast milk would be absolutely wonderful, but I can't find anyone to help me. It would be really nice if I could find someone who is already nursing their baby to try and nurse Isabella just to see if she can do it, but I have had no luck, plus I don't want her to "bite" someone.
I am willing to put forth the effort to attempt relactation if she will nurse. If not, then donated breast milk if I can find it.
Isabella does have developmental delays, albeit not bad ones, but enough to drive me crazy and really make her struggle, but she is alive and smiling and the coolest baby. She was not supposed to live more than 48 hours or the docs thought they would have to take her off of life support. Well she proved them all wrong.
I really want breastmilk for Bella or better yet to nurse her. If I could get her to nurse it would be the best thing that ever ever happened to me in my life. I always took breastfeeding for granted and actually would complain when my babies would not break the suction and let go. <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif" alt="" /> Now I wish Isabella was doing that.
