Hi there. I guess I'm really looking for encouragement and to find out if my experience is typical. Overall I am pleased, but anxious to build my milk supply.

I followed the regular protocol for 10 months before stopping the Yasmin (YAY!) and starting the herbs and pumping. The first time I pumped I was thrilled when I saw a couple of drops. That was 4 days ago. My output has gone from a couple of ML per day to 1.5 oz per day in 4 days. When I think about it, that seems fast enough, but 1.5 oz in a whole day isn't much milk at all and I'm wondering what other Mom's experiences were, that followed the regular protocol.

BTW I pumped 6 times the first day, and have been pumping 8-11 times per day since. It is SO hard to get up every 3 hours at night to pump so I'm going to need some serious results or encouragement to keep this up. I keep telling myself I'd have the same sleep schedule with my baby home with me, only thing is, I wouldn't have to get up and go to work like I am now :P It's really hard.

Thanks for any experiences you care to share!
Jenny

I followed the regular protocol from August to Jan, then started the herbs/pumping until baby was born in March. when I first pumped I got 2cc's and it slowly increased to 3,5,7,15 etc by the time baby was born I was pumping only an ounce at a time every 3 hours but I knew she would make me make more. My actual plan was to pump every 1-2 hours the week before she was born and she came during that week so that didn't work.hehehehe
At first I made almost all her needs and it slowly decreased to about 70% and now at 9 months I am at about 50% of her needs (I haven't really measured but she only gets about 2-3 6oz bottles during the day when I am home and she drinks about 6 bottles when I work 12 hours a day so I know I am making enough. I have to be honest... I pumped right before bed and then again at 6am when I was getting ready for work. I never did pump in the middle of the night. I probably had a little less milk but I was OK with it. As long as you are making some I think that when the baby is with you then you will make more, you will increase. Maybe you could start pumping at night a few weeks before you actually go and get little Helina. Then your milk will increase during those weeks. Just keep going. Any amount of milk for your little one is better than nothing and you will both benefit from the nursing relationship!

Here is another hint for you when you pump at night. Pump and then put your pumps in the fridge instead of taking care of the milk in the middle of the night. Makes for quicker pumping.

I did the protocol from mid April until mid December. We had no notice, so I started pumping the day we were placed with DD. I increased pretty quickly, but I also had the baby with me. I got drops right away and a teaspoon each pumping after 3 days. I was up to about 1 oz every pumping session after a week. After 2 weeks I was able to exclusively bf her, but she was probably only taking 1 1/2 - 2 oz each time. I pumped once during the middle of the night until she was 3 months old. We woke her up once in the middle of the night until she was 4 months old (she was tiny and that was her best feed). It sounds to me like you are doing great! Keep up the good work!

I think you are doing great lots of women see a big increase about 2 weeks into pumping. So for it only being 4 days I think 1.5 oz is great!

Wow, those are some great success stories! I have now been pumping for 6-7 days and am getting 7-12 ml per session, and just about 3 oz per day. So it really is increasing pretty rapidly. That is what's keeping me motivated to get up at 1 and 4am!! Misidawnrn, We are picking up our daughter in 5 weeks, so I'll keep up the nightly pumping I guess. Thanks for your encouragement moms!

Well done on the night pumping! I did it at first but stopped after about a month of it (we did not have a match at the time). Emom is due in march so I will start doing night pumping sometime in Feb.

I did the accelerated protocol and now, after 3 months of pumping, am getting 7-8 ounces a day. I pump 4-5 times a day. At first, the increase was about an ounce a week but then it tapered off and I sat at 6 ounces forever. Finally, I have gotten over that standstill and am moving up again.

Good luck with your placement! Sounds like you will have no troubles reaching your goal in 5 weeks when you pick up your daughter!

Thanks! Yes the night pumping is really difficult especially since I work full time. Starting last night I decided to pump once during the night instead of 2. I am now pumping 3.25-3.5 oz per day and have been stuck there for several days. Cool thing is I can tell when I need to pump...breasts get a little sore and fuller feeling.

Congrats on your 7-8 oz per day, that is awesome! And good to know to watch for about an oz per week increase. I know everyone is different but I like to have goals, it really keeps me going and motivated.

I ordered a hands free pumping bustier the other day. I think it will help me to be able to do something other than hold the flanges and will milk to come out while I am pumping!

I have mastered putting the pumps under my shirt and kind of holding them there while I sit with my laptop. It works well and I can cover up so if my kids come in, they dont even notice what I am doing!

I am really curious to see what happens when I start the night sessions again. When I was doing it, I would really be sore in the mornings because I was needing to pump. Now that I am getting a lot more milk, I wonder if it would increase my supply by a noticeable amount. I am anxious but not anxious enough to do it yet! I will by early Februrary I think.

MamaT, Did you adopt internationally or domestically? Just curious. I like your profile pic.

I think you will definitely get more milk when you add night time pumping. That's the way it works, anyway. You can have a high prolactin level, but you also need to empty the breasts frequently.

It seems everytime I post about about my milk production it changes the next day and I have to eat my words. I have now been pumping for 2 weeks and am pumping over 4.25 oz per day of breast milk!

I got my hands-free bustier and it is great. I wear it to pump and the time flies while I type on the computer. (I am actually pumping at the moment!!) I pump longer this way because I'm not staring at the bottles which makes the time pass soooo slowly. It is harder to massage and compress with the bustier on but overall I am pleased.

Ladies, how is your tolerance of the pump suction? I find it very irritating and most of the time my areolas and nipples feel tender and sensitive. I am using a Medela Lactina and start on the lowest suction setting and rarely make it to the middle setting. But I'm on the fastest speed setting. Still figuring out what is most comfortable with maximum output.

Jenny,
I adopted my oldest and youngest from the US. My middle daughter was a family placement so she was 3 and from BC, Canada where I am from. My US adopted kids were both newborn placements, as is this next one due in March!

I do what you do, pump and hang out on the adoption board or here. Works great!

Good for you for getting so much already! How long were you on the bcp? I was only on for 40 days. I couldnt tolerate the feelings I was getting on it so I went off early than anticipated. Plus, I was spotting for 3 weeks straight. It was so annoying.
Now, I am pumping 7-7.5 ounces a day and am hoping with christmas break here, I can up it some more. Do you pump at night? I was at first but its so hard to get up when there is no baby to wake up to! I decided I would start getting up through the night in February. That will give me just over a month to get used to the night time feedings!

I have a good tolerence to the pump. I was using the medela symphony but it was $125/month to rent so I borrowed a pump in style from my girlfriend. That works well too. I have had no problems this time with the suction. I tried pumping b4 my ds was born but it was so painful I had to stop. This time is much, much better.

Hey there. Haven't been around much lately as I was off of work and our home internet connection was down.

I am up to 6+ oz per day now, after 3 weeks of pumping. I also switched from the 24mm flange to the 21mm flange with an improvement to the discomfort. It's still not pleasant to pump, but better and I can tolerate slightly higher suction with the smaller flange.

I took the bcp (yasmin) for 10 months. And I do pump at night, trying not to go more than 4.5 hours at night without pumping. Usually that means pumping between 9-10 pm, 2-3 am and again at 6-7 am. Then during the day it's mostly every 2-3 hours. I get 7-9 pumping sessions in per day, usually 8.

Since I'm up in the middle of the night anyway, I can now time my Dom and herbs doses. The Dom I take every 6 hours, the herbs every 8 hours. It's working out really well now.

Have you been able to up your output over the break? How's it going?

I'm on the regular protocol but I'll only be on it for about 2 month's so really I should have started the accelerated protocol but oh well. I started that last time we were going to adopt and I had "break through bleeding" for 13 day's so I opted not to do that this time. I was on the accelerated protocol for about 2 month's then went off it for the past month because our adoption failed. We were matched again and I am back on the protocol. I'm hoping the fact that I was on it before will help but who knows. I'm really nervous about being able to produce enough milk for our LO. Also nervous about the adoption going through. I hope I can produce enough milk.

I've only been on the protocol this time around for about 17 day's now (with the 30 day break in between). It's good to hear people's success stories. But I also realize everyone is different.

Jenny, I am getting 8 ounces or more fairly consistently now. I havent had a lot of time to increase pumping sessions over the break but I still seem to be moving up!
When is your baby coming home? I am thinking that I maybe soon should start the night pumping sessions. I bet that will increase my supply.
I am still only getting to pump 4-5 times a day but no matter if I do 3 times or 6, I still get about the same, 6-7 ounces from one side and 1.5-2 from the other.
Is your production as lopsided as mine? haha

hvnsnt, when is your baby due? I started the accelerated protocol and started pumping in mid sept. with no match but I could not stand the dizzy spells or the spotting that I was getting from the bcp so I went off early. We did not get a match until november and the match was with an emom due in March. By then, I will have been pumping for 6 months! Crazy but I would not stop for anything now!

Our BM is due in April. I'm very nervous though. Our last adoption failed when the BM went into labor so this time around no one knows about our match accept 2 of my closest friends. We aren't telling family and the rest of our friends till we are ready. We had to cancel my baby shower last time 2 day's before the shower (BM went into labor at 33 1/2 weeks).

I think I'm getting the growth again but no tenderness or anything.

hvnsnt, I do like to read people's stories, too. It is so encouraging and helpful. Good luck with the current birthmom. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it was to lose the last one. Fingers crossed for you.

MamaT: I am also up to 8 oz/day and even pumped 9.5 day before yesterday!! WooHoo! We leave in 11 days to pick up our baby girl in Ethiopia. She'll be 10 months old, and I'm really hoping she takes the breast.

I've found it takes a few days at the same output before I'll have an increase. I wonder if you consistently increased the number of times/day you are pumping for a good week or so, if you'd notice an increase in output by then? I bet you would. My output is not as lopsided smile Sometimes both sides produce the exact same amount and sometimes one will produce a few ML more than the other, and it changes. Kinda weird that way. Hey, do you do compression while you are pumping, and hand expression afterward? That might help to fully empty the breasts and encourage an increase in output.

I agree, it does take at least a few days at the same output before an increase. I also am busy and so finding time to consistenly pump more often will be difficult until baby comes. Emom is due in March, right in the middle of spring break so I may have a week or so to up the number of times, before we have to travel!
I do compression while I am pumping. I am seeing an increase in the slow side, but it is very slow! I am now getting about 50 -60 ml (1.5-2 ounces) per day on the slow side. The other side is at least 6.5-7 ounces. Weird! If I do have to supplement, it will be on the slow side I think!

Good luck with everything! You must be getting excited now!

We just found out yesterday, that we are expecting a baby GIRL!
Only 10 more weeeks!

Oh, congratulations! Baby girls are so much fun to shop for!
I wonder why the slow side is so slow? Good sign that it's increasing though. The other side sounds like a great producer!

We ARE excited. Got her Ethipoian birth certificate yesterday with OUR names on it YAY!

I don't know if this is a valid suggestion, but is it possible you have a clogged milk duct on your slow side? Have you had a doctor look at it? If it's an easy fix then it may be better to have it looked at sooner than later.

Yay, Jenny! That is so exciting! Yes, little girls are fun to shop for! This is girl #4 for us so our little man will be surrounded!

My slow side has always been slow. Right from the beginning. I have thought about that lately though. My dr did an exam and didnt feel anything...although that was at the very beginning when I was first pumping.

Who knows...At least I have one good side!

Helina will be 10 months old in a couple of days. We were matched with her the day after she arrived at the orphanage at a month old. She wasn't paper ready for the adoption yet, and then her case got stuck in a court closure over the summer, so we have suffered through delay after delay. However we have been to visit her 3 times, the first when she was 5 weeks old. They are precious memories that we treasure. Last I saw her was in Sep at 6 months old. She has a photo of us in her crib, and I'm hoping she recognizes us when we pick her up next week.

Aww, how special. In the scheme of things, 10 months is nothing. You will have her in your arms and experience all of what you would with a newborn. She will have so many firsts after she comes home to you...including first opportunity to breastfeed!! yipee!

I was so excited last night. I ended up increasing by at least an ounce! I got 9.5 ounces! Not sure what i did different except that I have been eating oatmeal every day this week to see if it makes a difference! Maybe it has. We will see today after I complete my pumping for the day.

Hey, congrats! I did the same when I hit 9 oz last week. I had 9.5 oz one day, then 8.5, then 7.5, then 8.5, etc and now I have been back to over 9 oz for 2 days in a row.

If I'm not online for a while it's because I am preparing for our trip this week, then we will be in Ethiopia until the 23rd. Can't wait to hear your production numbers by then, LOL!

I'm going to go buy some more oatmeal! HAHA

Hey! Our embassy date in ET was delayed so we are not leaving until next Friday now. :((( We will be in ET from Jan 22-Feb 6. I can't wait to see my baby girl!!!! Yes, we are bringing her home this time.

Cool news, I am up to 10 oz per day. My small freezer is about full and I'm feeling pretty good. The breasts are not, though. They don't like being pumped and just about scream every time I hook up the suction. OUCH! I go back and forth between the 21 and 24mm flanges to give the nipples a break - the rub is a little different with each size flange. The 21mm are really too small so I just use them once in a while. I mostly use the lowest suction setting on my pump, but the highest speed. I'm really hoping the baby nursing will be more comfortable. But something tells me her suction will be stronger. I don't know what I'm gonna do...! Yiiiiiikes!

How's your milk supply MamaT?

Jenny I would watch all the videos on latching. Making sure you have a good latch will minimize the soreness. It should not hurt to nurse. If it does your latch is not good. You maybe sore for a few days but I always thought that nursing was far more comfortable than pumping. Good luck to you. It is so close!!!!

Jenny, sorry to hear that you have been delayed again frown That is so hard! Soon, you will have your baby girl in your arms!

Ouch! That is hard when it hurts like that! Has it always? Have you tried putting cream or something on your nipples before you pump? Like lanolin, something that doesn't hurt milk?
I have been lucky. There are times when I really need to pump and I am really cold and so nipplitis plus pumping doesnt go too well together! I just lower the suction for a few minutes and then I am ok.
I wonder if you changed pumps, if it would be better? Who knows! You have probably tried it all!

I am getting about 8.5-9 ounces consistently. I am going to start night pumping in February so hoping for an increase then!

We are 8 weeks from due date now! I am starting to think about getting little things ready here and there.
Dh is moving our youngest out of the small room (perfect nursery size) tonight. He will paint his new room tomorrow and then I can empty out the room and paint it for our baby girl!

Baby prep is a lot of work, but fun. What color are you painting?
The sore nipples are not getting better. I'm going to do a separate post for help.

I am not sure what colour yet. First, I need to pick out the crib bedding. I have found a set that I really like. It is cream and red. So cute. If I go with that, I will paint it cream.

One less day to wait now!

WOW! Good for you! What did you eat??? haha

I like either, not too picky but never thought red would be something I like. Turns out, set is really cute and red! We will see though. Still not sure.

Is baby's room ready?

Back down to 9oz today. So weird. We are minimalists, so yeah the baby's room is ready, it's just a crib in her brother's room, though. They have to share, we have a 2 bedroom home.
