method.

I am getting really nervous. I am mom to two boys ages 8 and 6 adopted at birth and I chicken out both times. I reallywant to breastfeed baby #3.
I have a few questions:

1. Should I make an appointment to get the domperidone pills ?
2. Do I pump during the natural method or after the baby arrives?
3.Should I just buy the book ? Which book ? Is there a tape I should follow?

Can someone help me thru this <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

my suggestion would be to do the accelorated protocol. There is not much luck with just pumping and domperidone. Though I have known of 2 moms who have had success this way. One is on this site. You could order the yasmin and domperidone and give yourself a good 4 months on the protocol then start pumping. The reason why I say this... I did the pumping without the protocol and never saw a drop. But with the protocol I am now pumping ounces. Most of us get our yasmin and domperidone from NZ. There is links on this site to get it.You can also read about the protocols on this site as well. If you want to try the other way that is up to you. But I would think your chances are better to get your breasts developing...

sorry... I did not look and see the forum you posted in. You posted in the natural induction. Okay.. you can get the domperidone from NZ in 2 weeks if you order. The Domperidone is not widely available here in the states. Some compounding pharmacies do make it. But it is extremely expensive and does not always work well. So I would suggest starting the domperidone 20 mg... 4 times a day. Pumping every 2 1/2. Also you can take fenugreek and blessed thistle 3 capsules of each 3 times a day. Oatmeal atleast 3 times a week. And drink to thirst. Keep hydrated. DO NOT drink tons of water. That will NOT help you.

Hello,

If you have looked into the protocol and decided it's not something you want to do, that's fine - there obviously are other options. If you haven't, I would suggest you read it up - it's all on this site and pretty straightforward really, and with the kind of timeframe you have it could make a lot of sense.

Please do not take this as trying to push you in one direction - absolutely not my intention. There is loads of information here, choose whatever is right for you and all the best in your journey!

Love,
Chris

Non,

I think I SHOULD use the accerated protocol. Do I need a doc's prescription to recieve the meds? We are military thus our meds are free.

Secondly, is there an accerated, natural method? I am fearful of any side effects. If they are mild I know I can tolerate. I just know my soon to be baby boy will need breast milk because the mother did not receive pre natal care for the first 4 months and everything is fine now but, I believe his birthweight will be small compared to my other two sons.

Thanks

P.S. Am I on the right board ? I don't know.

I am not aware of any natural accelorated methods.. You can get the BCP's from your doctor.. You want Yasmin. Take them without a break. Now the domperidone would have to come from a compounding Pharmacy. I don't know if you have one around you. If not you can get them from NZ. But I would get right on it.. time is running out <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Hi Yasta,

Congratulations on your impending arrival!!

The fastest way to bring in your milk supply is with the accelerated protocol which can be found here: http://www.asklenore.com/breastfeeding/print/induced_lactation/protocols4print.html Just scroll down to the Accelerated Protocol.

The fastest "natural" protocol is to pump without meds but to use herbs fenugreek and blessed thistle. This is a very risky option. You may or may not make milk this way.

Another option is to use domperidone without the birth control pill and pump. Several mothers have tried this option and brought in a milk supply after several months. Sone mothers can bring in a milk supply after several weeks this way too.

As I said, the fastest way is the accelerated protocol which involves the use of domperidone and a special birth control pill (for your breasts not for contraception). These are taken together to mimic what happens to your breasts during pregnancy. The side effects are similar to when a woman is pregnant.

Since your baby is due in August you'll need to begin as soon as possible.

Once your baby arrives you can breastfeed with the lact-aid www.lact-aid.com filled with either formula or donor milk until your own milk supply is well established.

Hope this helps.

Fondly,

Hello Yasta,

Let me just add my two cents' worth here, not as an expert but as somebody how has gone through the same decision process very recently.

I am not sure there really is such a thing as an entirely natural method, except perhaps doing absolutely nothing and just putting your baby to the breast and seeing what happens. This does not seem likely to produce a lot of milk though, and while up to now there seems to be woefully little hard scientific research on the whole issue, it does seem that you increase your chances of producing significant milk by degree of medical intervention you are prepared to take

Even herbs have side effects - the fact that a substance is natural does not make it safe - some of the most deadly poisons on earth are entirely herbal.

On the other hand the medications used for inducing lactation are not remotely experimental but have been studied extensively - the bcp probably much more so than the domperidone.

BCPs have been taken by literally millions of women across the globe and are designed for long - term use - women typically take them for years or even decades.

That doesn't mean they carry no risk - any kind of medication does- but the risks and counter-indications that exist are well known and well documented and surprises are unlikely.

Personally I was much more concerned about the domperidone, a drug I was not at all familiar with. It does seem the key to succesful milk production though and on the research I did I found no serious concerns.

My own reasoning was that if I was going to take the domp I might as well go the whole hog and do the protocol.

There are obviously other valid options for inducing lactation and you should choose whatever you feel is right for you - but yes, do try to make a decision fairly soon as time is in fact important - in retrospect I certainly wish I had moved faster.

Keep us posted,

Love,
Chris

O.K. I am starting to breath and gather my confidence... thank you ladies.

Now I made out my check list :

1. Buy double pump to start accelerated protocol
2. Make doc . appt. to get BCP ( Yasmin) and domperidone
3. Buy lact-aid to supplement w/ donor milk or formula
4. Register and switch to Medical Intervention to Induce Lactation board to get support from the other moms <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

I can do this ... I can do this... I can do this

Make sure you print out the protocol to take with you. Most Dr's. are not aware of induced lactation using this approach. Be prepared with all of the information and don't be discouraged if they don't understand. You will do fine, I think you have made a wise decision.
