Hello,
I also have thrush in my breast. I have been on Nyastatin for 7 days, gentian violet for 4 days, bio K for 8 days and acidophilus for 8 days. Trying to watch what I eat, changing bras everyday, boiling pacifier... I'm afraid I've had it. I know I can try the GSE extract now and the miracle nipple cream, but honestly, I just want to get rid of it. I'm thinking of asking the doctor or Diflucan. I figure that's the heavy artillery and it'll have to work. Is it really alright to use this while breastfeeding? If it doesn't work, I'm thinking I need to switch to formula. I'm just exhausted and in pain and I need the relief. There is another problem. Apparently my baby is not latching properly. I was shown the right technique, but over and over again I can't seem to get it right. Thankfully the baby is still getting all the milk he needs, but as you know, it's not helping with the pain level. What do you think? Should I just go for Diflucan or should I try the GSE first?
Thanks
Lise

Does your baby have thrush in his/her mouth? If so you need to treat that too or it will just continue to cycle. I put acidolphilus on my nipples right before a feed so my son ingested it. Lenore has some recipe for a cream that Dr. Newman came up with that is supposed to do wonders. Often time the very meds they give you for yeast agravate the condition.Have you emailed Lenore directly? I am sure she can help. You also need to see a board certified lactation consultant to help you with the latching problem. How old is your baby? You can tickle the baby's lips with your nipple to get them to open wide and make sure you get as much of your breast in their mouth as possible. Once you get the latching down things will go much smoother. Please don't give up. <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for your response Lalle.
I have seen a lactation consultant, CLSC baby nurse, an MD who specializes, a pediatrician, an MD at a walk in clinic. I have now tried the GSE and I'll see if it works, but I've pretty much given up on the natural cure and I have asked a doctor for diflucan. I really hope it works because it's my last try. That and keep trying to get my baby to latch properly. Thanks again.

Hi,

My son had thrush at a few days old and passed it to me. We went back and forth with it. My son also had latching problems. The diflucan finally zapped it. this was six years ago. HOWEVER, since reading this board I recall someone mentioning that thrush can actually CAUSE baby to latch improperly b/c of pain. Is this true? Anyone??

Also, some lip and tongue exercises that a LC gave me cured the latch issue for my son - but as my LC said... it usually takes as long to undo the problem as it did to cause it so be ready for some hard work. It's worth it. Don't give up.

Hi Lise,

Thrush can be quite difficult to treat. We've come up with a protocol that we use in our clinic in Montreal that has proven to be quite effective. It's quite comprehensive and involves the use of Gentian Violet (a full 7 days), GSE (topical and oral), Acidophillus, and Dr. Newman's all purpose nipple ointment. Then, if after doing all of this for 2 weeks, if you are not pain free...add the Diflucan. Why not Diflucan right away?...because it is VERY expensive. Yes, it can work miracles...but even the so-called "magic bullet" needs help. So when we prescribe Diflucan we still advise our moms to do the Gentian Violet, GSE, Acidophillus, and Dr. Newman's ointment.

Our protocol for thrush may be found here:

http://www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/sore_nipples_candida.html

Also, please keep in mind that thrush pain can be confused with pain from Raynaud's syndrome which can accompany either thrush or problems with latch and positioning. Raynaud's can be treated with Vit B6. This protocol may be found here http://www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/raynaud.html

Don't give up. You can conquer thrush.

Fondly,
