I need help from anyone that can help me. My friend had her baby a year ago and did not breastfeed. She has been on the Depo-Provera shot since she had him. The other day she got the shot and a day or two later she started lactaiding. Is this normal or can it cause a problem say with maybe breast cancer or something else? Please help me if you can. She is only 23 years old and is scared to death. Thanks a bunch!

I don't think the depo shot has anything to do with it. If she has been having stimulation to the breasts it can cause them to leak. Maybe hubby has been messing around. Or she has been going bra less. IF she is still concerned. I would suggest her going to see her family doctor.

She went and saw the doctor but they didnt even know. Thats why I'm trying to see if anyone would be able to help me find out what might be the cause of it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I notice you say she didn't nurse. But that doesn't mean she didn't produce milk, maybe she just never noticed it before. I had milk for a long time after my second son weaned. I am still nursing my youngest and nursed his sister before that into my pregnancy. So my only weaning experience is with the one 15 years ago. It doesn't sound like it is anything abnormal. I would suggest she contact a lactation consultant and get her questions answered by someone involved with breast milk issues.

Hi Daniele,

The Depo shot has quite a bit of progesterone which actually encourages milk making tissues. It's possible that your friend has had some milk this whole time and just didn't notice it. Lactating is not a sign of breast cancer. She can drink Sage tea or take Sage in capsule form to help dry up her milk. I agree, she should be seen by a breastfeeding specialist like a board certified lactation consultant. She can find one here www.iblce.org. Just click on the "About IBLCE" button and the US and International registries pop up. There is another possibility, although it is remote and I stress, remote, that she may have an issue with her pituitary gland. So have her see the IBCLC and then have her see an MD.

Warmest regards,
