I induced lactation and now, my adopted daughter is 8 weeks old and has been nursing since she was born. (in fact 45 minutes after, I put her to my breast) Now, I'm not taking medicine or herbs or pumping and am engorged REALLY bad. She nurses ever 3 hours and is growing at an acceptable and exceptional rate for adoptive breastfeeding. How can I slow the production of milk? I am leaking at the first sound of a baby (tv, neighborhood or store) and leaking ALOT, soaking nursing pads. I apply preasure and it helps, but I am really confused. Can someone please help me? Congratulations on a fabulous result!!!

The best thing you can do is contact a board certified lactation consultant to assist you. It sounds as if your breasts are not fully draining during feeds. You can find a board certified lactation consultant here www.iblce.org Just click on the "about IBCLE" and the US and international registries pop up. The LC will be able to give you strategies for dealing with this and good tips too.

Warmest regards,

As Lenore said, congratulations on having such great results! If you are willing to share, I am curious about what protocol you followed i.e. what you did to prepare to have such a wonderful supply?

Ditto here! Congratulations on your success in breastfeeding and getting a full milk supply! That's awesome. Please share your story, preparation, and protocol with all of us who are hoping to do the same thing.

Sorry to hear that it sounds as if its become a nuisance though. Best wishes!

I have no problems sharing my experience. First, I found out only 6 weeks prior to our baby's birth. I was told (please do not laugh) that large doses of vitamin E, Vitamin C and Oatmeal twice a day (with Karo or maple syrup) mixed in. I know, sounds terribly gross, but I did it. I took 2 vitamin E and 2 vitamin C at breakfast with OJ and oatmeal. At oatmeal cookies and then lunch was ALL protien. (Egg sandwich, grilled chicken salad, tuna, pnut butter) Supper was oatmeal with syrup. I ate this way for 2 weeks, the began to pump with the PIS from Medela. 5 days later, I had about 8 drops from each breast, 3 days later, had small stream and by our precious daughter's birth, I had been able to pump about 4 ounces from each in morning and about 2 ounces total at each additional pumping. Putting her to the breast IMMEDIATELY helped a bunch!! Within 4 weeks, her ped said I had a 90% milk supply and at 6 weeks, supplying ALL her milk. I am no doctor, but I think the vitamins and protien worked together and the oatmeal increased supply and the syrup did something too...not sure. But I am not eating like that anymore, eating healthy and still leak. It has slowed up some. My daughter is a healthy 14 lbs at her 2 month check up, doubling her birth weight.
As far as draining, there is no more milk when she is done, but miraculously within a half hour, I am leaking. I will do as Lenore suggests. Thanks for all the support and help!! I will be more than happy to discuss this should anymore questions come in. (No problem)

I just wanted to add that the "protocol" that I mentioned and followed was not only successful (maybe too successful) for me, but also 3 other women in my area that are adoptive breastfeeding. Oh, Lenore, I contacted a LC and she was GREAT!!! She gave me some suggestions and will be here tomorrow to check latch position and my other "habits" during breastfeeding. She specializes in adoptive breastfeeding and NATURAL induced lactation. Thanks again for your help!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> [color:"purple"] [/color]

Stephanie,
Wow you did great for 6 weeks! Can you email me with exactly what you did? mkdawnt at yahoo.com
We will find out about 6 weeks before the baby is born if we have been selected.
I started the herbs today but now looks like I should concentrate about my diet too.
Thanks!!!!

Hi!
The dosage for the vitamins were 1000 mg for E, and 5000 mg C. Caution: Ask your doctor FIRST as this high dose can cause problems with kidneys!!! Get his/her clearance first! (Like I did) Also, I would eat fruit with breakfast (strawberries and blueberries galore!!!) a banana for afternoon snack and light veggies with lunch/protien. I ate All protien for about 3 months total (pre-birth and post combined). Like I said, it worked for me, but I have NO idea, why! It also worked for my friends. A doctor at Emory in Atlanta is the one that suggested this. I don;t know if it was a study or just his own curiosity to prove it couldn't work. Oh, well. Thanks for your question!

Hi Stephanie,

Congratulations on your success! I'm very curious to know the exact dosages of vitamin E and C. How many miligrams per capsule? And how much oatmeal? Was it instant or the kind that you cook for a while?

Warmest regards,

(Like I did) The oatmeal was instant in the morning and then in the afternoon, I used the cooked variety. Of course, don;t forget the cookies...homa-made or the pillsbury ones that are in the package were the BEST..oatmeal raisin!! MMM!!!

Did yo continue to take this dosage once you received your baby? Are you still on the vitamins and still eating this way?

I am now taking lower doses. (Breastfeeding and all) I eat protien, but do not combine it with carbs...i.e. chicken and pasta. That prevents the absorption of the protien. I eat more fruit, more veggie, but still no "whites" (Sugar, flour....) I feel wonderfully healthy. My leaking has been better this weekend and am extremely thankful for that! My daughter is thriving and really a healthy little girl. I know my protocol was EXTREME in the way no medicines or herbs were used, but it worked for me. Like diets and medicines, it may not give the same results to most people, but for me, this one DID work! Prayer helped too!!

I want to try this protocol because I only have a month before my baby is here I just want to get a good understanding it. For lunch did you have bread with every lunch and with the Pnut Butter was it a sandwich with jelly and also what about fried meats. I noticed on an earlier reply you said not to combine the carbs and meat. You will have to combine some of them wouldn't you? For emaple the oatmeal cookies they have both sugar and flour. One more thing have you ever been pregnant? A LC told me today that it would be hard to induce a full supply of milk for my baby and I have never been pregnant. Thanks for all the good ideas hopefully after this one I will be ready to start and have a good outcome like you did!!!!

Ok, here is a typical day:
Breakfast
Instant Oatmeal (Any variety with Karo Syrup)
Vitamins
OJ
Snack: Banana
Lunch
Egg Salad Sandwich
Brocolli Flourets
OJ
Snack:Oatmeal cookies (Pillsbury, cut and bake)
Milk
Dinner
Cooked Oatmeal (Any variety with Maple Syrup)
Orange

Yes, I did mix some carbs and protien, however, I limited the amount. Bread was always whole wheat. True, sugar and flour was in the cookies, but very little and it was another way to eat oatmeal. Pasta is very heavy and not recommended. This worked for me, but others have better results with the herbs and medicine. I think it is all a preference. I can not stress enough the importance of the hospital or professional grade pump. Be more than happy to accept emails at canjrdn1 at yahoo.com! Thanks!!

This is great .You can store the milk.Pump your breast dry ,then you can have spare milk when tired(other do the feeding for you)or when shopping.

Stephanie, if you are still reading these posts I am curious if your full supply continued. Our baby is 13 days old and I have only had to supplement her once and I am just wondering if my body will keep up with her needs, or do I reach a peak at some point and have to start supplementing regularly... what has your experience been?
