Hi Everyone,

We'll the day has finally arrived after 3 years of trying since our son was born. We had a positive beta of 93!

We do this thing where if the news is positive our GS calls and if it's negative the counselor calls. We were expecting the call in the afternoon and so when our GS called in the AM I didn't quite "get it" at first. I was driving and had to pull over into a parking lot as she told me. It was like "OMG YOU'RE calling me" which could only mean that the news was good.

We're presently vacationing in Florida so my husband, Rob was on the golf course. I wanted our wonderful GS to have the pleasure of telling him so I had her call him. He was in the middle of a swing on the 18th hole and thought it was me calling to bug him. Boy was he surprised. He said later that his golf swing went south. He was too excited to do anything. And my dad was standing right there so Rob had to fess up.

Meanwhile there I was in the parking lot crying and happy at the same time.

Looking forward to our second beta. I'll post the news as soon as we have it.

I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement.

Fondly,

Lenore Goldfarb, Ph.D.,CCC,IBCLC

Congratulations Lenore,
Are you going to start the regular protocol again? I am so envious that you are able to have your and your husbands bio child with a surrogate. That is so wonderful. And a 3-4 year difference in age in your kids is going to be so perfect.
We are all so happy for you! Keep us posted! Take care, Cathy

Hi Everyone,

As you know, our first beta was a very nice 93 and we were anxiously awaiting news that it would approximately double to at least 180 over the next two days. Our wonderful surrogate mom called first thing this morning to let us know that the 2nd beta was 203!!!!

My husband and I are over the moon with happiness today. Looking forward to weekly updates and planning our trip to see the heartbeat on ultrasound in about 3 weeks.

Once we see the heartbeat, I'll begin the Induced Lactation Protocol to bring in my milk supply as I did for our son Adam. I'm looking forward to the experience with far less anxiety this time around now that we know so much more about the process.

Thank you to everyone who emailed and posted with their good wishes and heartfelt words of encouragement.

Fondly,

Lenore Goldfarb, Ph.D.,CCC,IBCLC

Hi Lenore!
That is so great! Congratulations!
I am not normally on this board, as we are adopting. I just had to stick my nose in and find out how it's going with everyone here. I am so happy for you!!
Thanks for the PM, too. It meant a lot. I did post an update on the "other" board. Hopefully some will find it helpful to them.
Congratulations!! <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hi Everyone,

Well as you know our first beta was 93, our second beta was 203 and our most recent beta 1 week after the last was a whopping 3048!!! Since we transfered two embies, and since someone emailed to say that their first beta was a 90 and they're expecting twins, we all started to get pretty excited that this could be a twin pregnancy. Then our wonderful surrogate mom went to work and they started in on her about "hey maybe one split and you're carrying TRIPLETS".

I checked my son's numbers and they were almost identical not counting the initial 19 that turned out to be a lab error (we did some major sweating for two days). His beta 1 week later was 2832. So we were pretty comfortable that this was a singleton. I let our surrogate know that when our embies stick they really STICK and shoot high numbers and not to worry LOL.

Well she tried but she just couldn't stand the suspense, picked up her daughter from school and high-tailed it over to a relative who is an ultrasound technician. She emailed last night to say that they could see 1 fetus with the yolk sac and that everything was right on target for exactly 5 weeks!!! YAY!!!

My husband and I have already booked a flight to see the heartbeat and will go ahead with our plan to go and see our little one on March 18th. I'm going to go ahead and start the induced lactation protocol now that we have ultrasound confirmation. Just have to get my meds together.

Thanks again to everyone for their encouragement and support.

Fondly,

Hi Everyone,

When we last left off our beta was just over 3000 and here we are a week later (week 6) and it's 22,000!!! With a beta this high we realized that we would be sure to see a heartbeat on Tuesday March 18. Our wonderful gestational surrogate mom emailed to ask if we wanted her to check "the blob" lol at her sisters and we said "sure!". So she checked and we have a lovely "spud with buds" and the heartbeat was going gangbusters!!!!

This is really great!! Now my husband and I can enjoy the flight to see our surrogate mom without worrying about whether or not we're actually going to see "something" on the ultrasound when we get there.

Our surrogate mom was so excited that she faxed my husband and I a photo. Unfortunately it's a little difficult to see via fax. Sort of like looking at clouds in the sky....I'll be darned if that ultrasound picture didn't look just like a white cat!!

Anyhoo, we're finally on our way!!

As you know, I've been on the Atkins diet in preparation for the protocol to induce lactation. I was a bit chunky and needed to drop a few pounds. So I went on this diet and lost 17 pounds in 5 weeks!!! . I was a teeny bit worried about being 43 and overweight and on "the pill". I feel a lot better about going on the birth control pill and domperidone now. I have another week or so before I start and hope to lose another 5 pounds. Then I'll avoid carbohydrates as much as possible and hopefully I won't gain on the protocol except for breast volume LOL. Too bad we can't have the doctors take from our butts and poof up our breasts LOL. Wouldn't THAT be nice?

More soon....

Fondly,

Lenore,
Congrat's on the heartbeat! How exciting...I am glad you lost some weight before the protocol. As you know, I have now gained 45 lbs in 5 months. I luckily started out a size 5, but am now a 16. I had been on the Atikins for the last two years. But,,,I find it very hard to stay on with the hormones,,,not only am I hungry every two hours, but,,I am having such intense cravings for every carb you can imagine, things I had not eaten in two years! I eat fish, veggies etc...but other things I should not. I am just soooo hungry all the time. Of course working night shift doesn't help , eating at night when ones metabolism is at its lowest!
Anyways, good luck on the protocol and with your sonogram.
Take care, Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Thank you! Have you been to www.atkinscenter.com? You can order all kinds of goodies from there that won't make you fat. You can take 3 oz of heavy cream and mix it with 2/3 of a scoop of the shake mix and voila! Chocolate or Vanilla or Strawberry mousse that is only 1 or 2 carbs. Macadamia nuts are also a good snack or you can get a case of ready made Atkins shakes.

I'm really hoping to keep the weight off with Atkins. I'll let you know how I do. In the meantime, remember, once you breastfeed the weight should peel off.

Fondly,

Thanks Lenore,
Yes I am hoping the weight will peel off when I am nursing. I have been buying Atkins products for a long time, as well as 'low carb conissuier" and "low carb world" etc...and a favorite is "synergy diet" website. I have a freezer full of low carb stuff, problem is alot of it has ton's of soy flour,,,I thought we weren't supposed to have alot of soy on the protocol (estrogen) . My low carb bagels, bread, muffins all are loaded with soy. Without these, I feel too confined on the Atkins while on the hormones. I will go right back on it when I am done with everything. I am so glad it's working for you, I have been trying to convert people for a long time. Maybe after we both have our little ones we can go on a Atkins cruise , they are 2x a year and the average passenger looses 10 lbs. I think after all this adoption stress and paperwork, our new family of four will need to go on a nice vacation. Take care, Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Yes, you are very right about Soy products and the protocol. I don't really eat any bread products at all. I satisfy my cravings with either an Atkins cheesecake which has no flour at all, or with a scoop of shake mix and heavy cream.

I also take the Atkins supplements. I found that the Accel is a fantastic appetite suppressant. So far I feel fine but we'll see what happens when I go on the Ortho next week.

I'm also planning to start excercising. As you know I lost the weight strickly by doing Atkins without excercise because of a herniated disk in my neck. I was in rehab for this for over a month. I was typing in a neck brace...how dedicated is that?!!!

Anyway, now I'm ready to get on the Nordic Track and get busy.

Fondly,
