Just wanted to update you.......After 4 long years of waiting....Cody Garret was born April 19, 2006. He weighed 7 lbs 15 oz and was 20 inches long. He is so beautiful and has lots of black hair. We are in total love with him!

Question~ In the hospital they fed him with a regular bottle nipple (the long thin one), well he was on that bottle for 10 days. I have been trying to nurse since we got home and he is wearing me and himself out.....He will root, root, root at the breast and then "maybe" latch on for one suck and then he relaxes and then starts the horrible cycle all over again. By the time we are done he is wore out with nothing in his stomach and we are both sweating and frustrated.............any suggestions? I have used the nipple sheild but am I defeating the purpose b/c I am not as long as the nipple shield or firm so he is still not latching on to me?????

Thanks for any help and we are truely blessed!!!!!!!!!

Hugs,

Oh Shelley, What an absolute doll baby! I know you have been around here for awhile and I am soooooooooo happy for you and your wonderful family to finally be blessed with an angel!

I don't have any suggestions, but I wanted to say CONGRATS!!!

And to you too Shelley-all the wonderful blessing to you too

As I sit here nursing my 8-1/2 month old daughter, who came to us through a wonderful surrogacy experience...I wish you both sooooooo much success. There is nothing sweeter then nursing these God given angels.Keep up the good work and try not to get too discouraged, it will be so worth the super effort you are putting into it.

Shelley have you tried rolling your nipple between your fingers to get it to really stick out? That may help him latch, tickle his lips to get him to open up really wide. Also have you thought of seeing a Lactation Consultant?

Now let me say congratulations. He is beautiful. I am so thrilled for you and your family. You deserve this blessing you have waited so long.

HI Shelley,

CONGRATULATIONS on your new arrival!!!

It is VERY important that you contact and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) ASAP. The IBCLC can provide you with tips and strategies for getting your baby to latch. The sooner you arrange a home visit, the sooner you can solve this issue. Please do not wait and do not exhaust yourself and your baby. It is likely a fairly simple problem to solve with the right help. You can find an IBCLC here: www.iblce.org Just click on the "About IBLCE" button at the top of the page and the US and International Registries pop up.

Best,

Lenore Goldfarb, Ph.D.,CCC,IBCLC
Wife to Rob, Mom to Adam aged 13, and Ethan aged 9, both born via GS and breastfed via Regular Newman-Goldfarb Protocol.
