I have a PIS but have been debating renting a symphony for my first month pumping. The only difference between the 2 seems to be the motor. Is that enough to justify renting it? Does that make it more powerful then the PIS?

I rented a symphony for 4 months before I used my pis. I think that the symphony is a better pump but once the PIS works well too. I increased more quickly with the symphony. I think that if you are starting from the beginning, renting a sympony might be worth it for a little while. Finantially though, they are expensive so if you are wanting to save money, the PIS will work too!
