O MY GOSH!!! I just went out to my freezer and everything in it is thaw. Everything includes nearly 600 ounces of breast milk. I was wondering if I need to throw it out. Some of it is still icy but not frozen. Please dont tell me I have to throw it all out. I am just about to cry. I dont care about the meat that is ruined just my milk. It is still cold just not frozen. Please help. Is it all bad now.

Hi Julie,

You have two choices. Since the milk is still cold and since it's breastmilk you can try refreezing it. If you're concerned about refreezing it, all you have to do is pasteurize it and it will be good as new. If you email me at lenore@asklenore.info I'll be happy to email the pasteurization instructions. You can pasteurize about 224 ounces at a time if you use 16 oz jars and two big pots.

Fondly,

I kept the milk. I hope that it is all ok. I have used it once or twice and seems to be fine. I had it in my freezer in the house but moved it to the big freezer when we bought it. I figured since it was brand new it would be safe.

Glad to hear that the milk seems okay. I have a similar situation. My most recent donor lives in Florida and her power went out with Hurricane Frances before she sent me her last shipment .... the milk was in her deep freeze at the bottom under a bunch of food, freezer not opened once, for four and half days without power. Incidentally, the power remained out at her house for four and a half more days! Two thirds of the milk was still frozen when she could get back to the house, the balance was thawed but ice cold. She ran all the milk to her folks house where there was still power. She shipped all the milk to me. I cautiously proceded with all the milk ... starting with frozen milk ... Henry did fine. But then he started eating less and less, until one day he completely refused her milk (a thawed package that I pasteurized) but devoured a bottle of formula. My husband and I decided at that point that we would not give the thawed milk to Henry III anymore. I still have it ... there is man locally with prostate cancer that I heard about that wants breast milk ... he has done some research that it helps it apparently. Perhaps an adult stomach would accept the thawed mlk. I have to find this man though ... just had heard about him, never met him. Needless to say, this is miracle milk as the majority of it stayed frozed enough to remain okay.

So in my case, the thawed milk does not seem to be good for baby. Perhaps you caught yours sooner, which is why I was curious how your Little One responded/ if you kept the milk. You worked so hard to make that milk!

What are you going to do with the freezer? What a hassle for you! Ugh.

Keep up the good work!

Aloha,
Christina

Since the freezer wasnt nearly 3 months old is is under warrenty. I am using the milk that was still icy first. I am not currenty supplementing at all. Most days I have a full supply. Sometimes she is fussy at the breast and I think that maybe she needs more and I add a lact aid. Not very often though. I am hoping I wont need that other milk. The last couple of weeks she seems to have been eating ALL the time. The last couple of days she hasnt eaten as often and my breasts are very full. I dont know if maybe she was eating alot to increase my supply but it worked <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

That is great about your supply! If you do end up using any of that milk, let me know how it goes.

Keep up the good work!
