My baby is 5 months old. We have been nursing with no pain. The last couple of weeks she has been latching on and then off and crying. She doesnt seem to be eating as much or for very long. I didnt think to much about it until yesterday. Yesterday she hardly ate at all and when she did she cried. On top of that starting yesterday when she did nurse my nipples felt like they were on fire. I just nursed her and I was about to cry the whole time because of the pain. She also seems to be in pain when she nurses. Does this sound like yeast or thrush or something else? I will call the Dr tomorrow(monday). I know that we both have to be treated. Should I call her Ped. and would he treat us both? Thank you.

Hi Jewel,

It's very possible that your little one is teething. I went through this with both my sons. It doesn't usually last more than a couple of days. When they teeth, they want to bite down on something and your nipple is right there....so try to get your baby latched more deeply onto the breast. That will help.

Warmest regards,

I agree with Lenore. Olivia did this last week. But without the crying. She kept popping on and off and pulling then popping. I ended up sooooo sore. I thought it was thrush to. I checked her mouth and their was nothing. I then realized it was her activity. She also has started the biting my nipple and thinks its funny. But I have learned to brace her head with my arm the second I feel her start to pull back. It sounds to me like teething or an ear ache maybe or sore throat?

thank you both for your replies. I took her to the Dr today and they couldnt find anything wrong. They first thought it was her ears. They said she may now have gotten in the habit of eating while pushing on the breast and pulling on the nipple. Now I have to figure out how stop her from doing that.

Julie give her something else to do with her hands. Those teething bead type toys are good. Some moms where beads themselves when they nurse and baby plays with those. Keep your hand on her head and hold her fairly close if she starts to pull back hold her in place.

This sounds like very typical behaviour for a five month old. You don't want to make too big of an issue about it. I still feel that it's a teething issue. But you may want to try breast compressions to see if faster milk flow helps. There are instructions on how to do breast compressions here: http://www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/breast_compression.html

Hope this helps. Warmest regards,
