I am expecting our daugter to be born in August, via private adoption. I just began taking Dom today I have Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek Seed in capsules. Do I begin taking it all at the same time? I have heard to begin the Dom then begin the herbs after milk begins.....we don't have too much time being that we've already been to the hospital 2 weeks ago with early labor, she is currently effaced 70% but not yet dilated! I was also wondering if there was anything in my diet to add or stay away from. I am eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning and I do not smoke or drink, and I drink very little caffeine......any advice is very much appreciated......Jenn

I am just a regular person, not a lactation consultant, so hopefully one of them will give you more advice. You don't start taking the hebs until you start pumping, then you can start them. Are you on the birth control pills too? If you are taking the domp and BC pills, you don't mess with the herbs. If you have been taking them less than 2 months I would imagine they would advise you to continue on the BC pills and domp, then when baby comes, nurse her with lactaid after stopping BC pill and continue with herbs and domp until you can wean her off of the lact aid. I think the usual advice I see given is to stay on the protocol as long as possible before pumping. The oatmeal 1-2x a day is a good idea too. I even heard vitamin C and E are good. And some other lady suggested Karo and/or maple syrup in your oatmeal.
I really hope a more experienced person can give you advice, but that is what I think you are supposed to do.
Joy, mommy to three adopted blessings ages 5 and 3, and new preemie (born at 33 weeks)

Hi Jenn,
Joy is absolutely right about what we recommend. Have you considered the birth control pill? It's to help develop the milk making apparatus of your breasts. If for some reason you can't take the bcp, then our advice would be to start pumping with a double electric breastpump immediately along with your domperidone and herbs.
Typically though, when doing the domperidone/bcp combo, you don't start the herbs until you start pumping.
Warmest regards,
Lenore Goldfarb, Ph.D.,CCC,IBCLC Wife to Rob, Mom to Adam aged 13, and Ethan aged 9, both born via GS and breastfed via Regular Newman-Goldfarb Protocol.

Thanks so much, Lenore!! I will begin the herbs right away, I just got off bc, I was on the NuvaRing, I actually had way more progress this weekend with pumping, no milk yet, but I had large drops, about 8 of them!! This is way more than I've gotten to this point!! Thanks so much! Jenn

Jenn the nuvaring is not the same as doing the BCP protocol. You take the bcp (Yasmin is recommended) non stop for 30 days (No sugar pills)along with Domperidone. Then go off the bcp continue the dom and add the herbs, plus you start pumping every 2-3 hours and once in the night. That is the accelerated protocol. You can read up on them in the Main index go to the Newman-Goldfarb protocol link. We have seen the most successs from women who follow the protocol and you can do it even if your baby arrives soon. You just stay on the protocol and feed with a lact-aid until your 30 days is up. Then you would go off the bcp add the herbs and nurse baby with lact-aid as well as pumping for 10 minutes after nursing sessions. A baby at breast will bring your milk in quickly. The BCP and Dom are taking to develop the milk making apparatus in your breasts. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

OOOOhhhhhh, now I understand!! I thought that any bc would work.......since I am already getting pre-milk, should I still go back and take bcp? I am taking the Dom and will begin the herbs, also eating oatmeal everyday.....I am getting about 8 or so pretty good sized drops at every pumping session....if I choose not to do the bcp's will my milk production still increase? Just wondering.......I don't do very well on the bcp's........Thanks a lot.......Jenn

Your milk should dstill increase. I started off with my daughter (adopted after 2 bio sons both were breastfed) with just the lactaid and taking More milk tincture. I then heard about dom and added that as well as a slew of herbs. I also rented a pump to help, pumping after feeds. All in all I was making about 1/3 of her needs and I was able to feed without the lact-aid during the first feed of the morning. She also would comfort nurse without it to fall asleep etc... I then went on the protocol when she was over a year because she was and had been having digestive issues with cows milk and milk based formula as well as soy. After the protocol she never had anything but me for feeds. No lact-aid no bottle etc... I was pumping 2 ounces easy per session. It made all the difference for me and if I had known about the protocol before she was born or even when she was so tiny I would have done it then. Ultimately you have to decide. But since you have a month I wouold consider doing the protocol. Of course that depends on what kind of issues you have with the bcp. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
